The lingua franca of commerce and industry in South Africa is English. It follows that a poor command of English and lack of basic literacy skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) makes it impossible for the transferee* to take written instruction, let alone upgrade his/her language skills. Trainability in an English language environment and English literacy skills level go hand in hand. The Institute provides a measuring instrument named ELSA (English Literacy Skills Assessment), to:
Reading and Writing skills are learnt using Literati, an accelerated, fun-filled board-based programme to have adults master these basic skills in 3 weeks (block-release) or 80 hours staggered , but in their mother-tongue. This will fast-track English literacy programmes to follow.
