The lingua franca of commerce and industry in South Africa is English. It follows that a poor command of English and lack of basic literacy skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) makes it impossible for the transferee* to take written instruction, let alone upgrade his/her language skills.

Trainability in an English language environment and English literacy skills level go hand in hand.

The Institute provides a measuring instrument named ELSA (English Literacy Skills Assessment), to:

  • Serve as a Trainability Predictor
  • Use as a Selection Tool
  • Place in Learning programmes

Reading and Writing skills are learnt using Literati, an accelerated, fun-filled board-based programme to have adults master these basic skills in 3 weeks (block-release) or 80 hours staggered , but in their mother-tongue. This will fast-track English literacy programmes to follow.

*A transferee is a person who, in order to make a living, has to transfer daily from his/her natural language environment (and culture) to a different language environment (and culture) and is assumed/expected to cope like a mother-tongue user.
